I really affirm the idea of coaching in churches drawing out strengths of persons for diversity in what our churches would look like. I also affirm coaching being seen as helping persons move toward God and what God may be nudging the person toward. As a trained spiritual director (which is a misnomer as I don’t direct the person), listening to your podcast makes me wonder how this plays out in coaching. In spiritual direction sessions, I might ask, “So where are you seeing God in this?” Or “What may God be speaking to you about this?” So do you ever use broad questions like this in coaching if the person is a Christian and is needing to make some decision OR would you only use these type of questions when the person has already brought God specifically into the session by speaking about wanting to find God’s direction in some situation?

    1. Hi Sherill, Thanks for commenting. Those are exactly the kinds of questions a coach would ask (if appropriate in the coaching moment). I use those kinds of questions with any Christian client, but especially when they’ve brought God specifically into the current coaching conversation.
From my perspective, in spiritual direction those topics/questions are at the core of what the person is seeking and so they are used with far greater frequency in sp. directing, but they’d be very appropriate in coaching, too.
      Hope this helps.
      Chad
